Province of Antwerp

The Province of Antwerp is one of 10 Belgian provinces. In Belgium, the provinces are the governance level between the Belgian (Federal) and Flemish Governments, and the municipalities.
As a regional political body, the Province of Antwerp is responsible for multiple policy domains. One of them is environmental care, as in structurally improving networks in the domain of nature and landscape, biodiversity, environment, climate, water and health. We wish for future generations to be able to enjoy all aspects of the Antwerp Province in a healthy and sustainable way.

Tackling faunal and floral fragmentation is key, therefore we use ‘biodiversity landscapes’ [link in Dutch only], envisaging the desired green infrastructure for a certain area. We aim at improving our green infrastructure network and want to set up functional landscape networks outside protected nature areas.

Translating these policies into practice, the Province of Antwerp has a team of experts (ecologists) that implement projects on field. Their work consists of drafting nature, forest and landscape management schemes and advising on implementation.

Through monitoring projects we broaden our know-how and improve the efficiency of numerous defragmentation measures.

Finally, we also offer students a chance to participate in setting up monitoring projects around fauna tunnels [link in Dutch only]. Several new methods are being tested, like installing trailcams and new types of amphibian traps (fykes). We invite you to participate in monitoring fauna tunnels with trailcams in the Antwerp Province through DoeDat!
