The Amygdalaceae and Prunaceae were formerly taxonomically separated from the rose family. Further research has shown that these two families actually form one subfamily, namely Amygdaloideae under the Rosaceae.
They are shrubs, trees or herbaceous plants consisting of about 55 genera and 1,300 species with a sub-cosmopolitan distribution.
The largest genus, Prunus, contains 200 species, including those that produce economically important products such as almonds, cherries, plums and peaches.
The fruit of these plants are known as stone fruit (drupes), as each fruit contains a hard shell (the endocarp) called a stone or pit, which contains the single seed.
