Madagascar's flora is unique in many ways. To the east of the island, a mountain range stretches the entire length of the island, creating large climate differences on either side. As a result, the plant world has developed a large number of endemic species that are completely different from the flora of mainland Africa. Over 80% of the approximately 15,000 plant species on the island are found nowhere else in the world. Conservation International classified the island as a 'biodiversity hotspot'.
