Malawi is the current name for the former British protectorate of Nyasaland. Malawi's wildlife consists largely of savannah with various low-growth vegetation such as shrubs and various grasses. Much of Malawi's forest has been cleared to make way for farmland. The uplands are covered with low grasses, heaths and moorlands. Many flowering plants are also found here, blooming mostly after the rainy season. In addition, Malawi is best known for its many orchids. Many swamps occur around the large lakes and other wetlands. During the rainy season, there is also flooded grassland with swamp vegetation.
