African species and ecosystem diversity is extremely rich and of global importance. With a goal of deepening our knowledge of African biodiversity, at the Africa Museum we study the taxonomy and phylogeny of different groups of vertebrates and invertebrates, from morphological and genetic perspectives. Our researchers combine field work with the study of our collection, which numbers as many as 10 million specimens. Our aim is to expand and disseminate knowledge on African biodiversity through publications, online databases and training. We emphasise knowledge exchange with our African partners.
From this field work or African partners, mainly larger 'collections' arrived at the Africa Museum. This collection was then given a R.G. (registre générale) or I.G. (inventaire générale) number, which was written down in an acquisitions register. Each specimen (fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals) could be linked to a particular collection number.
