Burundi is characterised by a wide range of altitudes, creating diverse ecosystems in a relatively small area. The flora is dominated by mountain rainforests in the higher elevations and vast savannahs in the east. An icon of Burundian flora is the Entandrophragma excelsum, one of Africa's tallest tree species found in the national parks. Intensive agriculture has replaced the original vegetation with terraces in many places, but the remaining mountain forests still harbour rare orchids and ferns.
