The splendour of blooming flowers is what characterizes the spring! The more flowers, the more beautiful and the better the auspice for butterflies, bees and other insects… thus also for nature? The latter unfortunately seems not to be always accurate.
Great attention is asked about which species we cultivate in our gardens, because certain spring flowers, mostly exotic, spread easily and may grow rampant in nature. We call these plants invasive and they form a threat for our local biodiversity, they can sometimes become prejudicial for public health, and some invasive species even cause economic damages.
This project is a part of our new citizen science project Groene Pioniers (Green Pioniers), sponsored by the Flemish government. Groene Pioniers wants to raise awareness about the effects of invasive species on our biodiversity and society. The present DoeDat project thus focus specifically on herbarium specimen of invasive spring blossoms in Belgium.
