The Orchidaceae is the second largest flowering plant family after the Asteraceae. They live on every continent except Antarctica and in almost every habitat, from deserts to marshes, from the Arctic tundra to equatorial rainforests. They have some of the smallest and lightest seeds of any plant and this helps them disperse long distances in the wind. Often turning up in surprising locations. Orchids are famous for their ingenious pollinations strategies that often trick insects into being unwitting couriers of their pollen often with little or no reward.
