The Juncaceae are not the most spectacular plants. Their small brown flowers are wind pollinated and the tough stems make poor grazing. However, they do make habitat for a large number of other species, such as ground nesting birds. They are generally quite tolerant of adverse conditions and many species live in saline habitats where they get little competition for space. Some of Belgium’s rarest rushes come from the coast.
