The Juncaceae are not the most spectacular plants. Their small brown flowers are wind pollinated and the tough stems make poor grazing. They are generally quite tolerant of adverse conditions and many species live in saline habitats where they get little competition for space. Some of Belgium’s rarest rushes come from the coast.
