Are you passionate about the rich colours and intricate patterns of textile heritage? If so, this project is for you!
This initiative highlights a sub-collection of design drawings for woven interior textiles, featuring 890 design sketches and around 5000 technical drawings. Each woven piece starts with a design sketch, which is then translated into a more technical drawing tailored to the specific loom and the exact number of threads required. Next, a punch card is created, which allows the loom to mechanically interpret the drawing and weave the fabric.
It is a fascinating process that involves multiple players, from designers and design studios to technical draftsmen, card cutters, weavers and entrepreneurs. Some leave tangible marks on the designs and documents, while others add notes that reveal insights into their methods. These traces, found on both the front and back of the drawings, are what we aim to uncover and document. They offer valuable insights into the network of individuals involved, as well as the technical, artistic and entrepreneurial efforts that shape the textiles themselves.
Join us in showcasing these vibrant design drawings and help us bring them to life!
